Adverse Weather Alert Discontinued. Caroni River Above 90%

The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service has discontinued the Adverse Weather Alert for T&T. While rivers and tributaries remain elevated, aslow and steady decrease is expected after low tide, at 1:39 AM, November 26th, 2025.

What you need to know

— What: Elevated moisture moving across T&T and the Windwards associated with the ITCZ, surface to low-level confluence on the southern periphery of a ridge across the Atlantic, and weak low-level troughing producing unsettled weather across T&T on Tuesday, with unsettled weather likely through the week as upper-level conditions become more favorable. As a result, periods of rain, isolated to scattered showers, and thunderstorms occurred across T&T.
— Where: On Tuesday, minimum rainfall totals ranged between 15 and 25 millimeters, and maximum 24-hour totals exceeding 60 millimeters, favoring northern and eastern areas of Trinidad. Gusty winds (45-55 km/h) also occurred, with higher gusts across Tobago in heavy shower/thunderstorm activity.
— When: The Adverse Weather Alert was discontinued by the TTMS at 9:07 PM on Tuesday.
— Impacts: Additional rainfall may trigger further street/flash flooding, and localized ponding in heavy downpours, accompanied by gusty winds likely exceeding 45 km/h. These wind gusts, combined with heavy rainfall, may lead to fallen trees/utility poles/lines and landslides, as well as localized wind damage and agitated seas.
— What Should You Do: Motorists and residents in areas prone to landslides or flooding, especially along the Caroni River Basin, should still monitor the situation and exercise caution. Be aware of your surroundings and changing weather conditions

Adverse Weather Alert information from the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service

The TTMS states, “After today’s rainfall event, conditions have begun to settle. The occasional isolated moderate to heavy shower or thunderstorm is still possible during the night; however, the frequency, duration, and intensity are expected to be reduced. The risk of impactful weather is now reduced. With that being said, caution is still advised. Due to saturated soils, additional rainfall may trigger landslides/landslips, especially along hillsides and other vulnerable areas. Rivers and tributaries will also remain elevated as runoff continues through the night. The Caroni river at El Carmen specifically has exceeded initial threshold levels, and other parts remain elevated; however, a slow and steady decrease is expected after low tide, at 1:39 am, 26 November 2025.”

The alert’s color indicates the event’s severity and the likelihood of its occurrence. Currently, the alert level is green. This alert status considers the possibility of the event ending, with certainty at its second-lowest level, at “possible,” and severity remains moderate. Discontinuations and green-level alerts have historically been issued with a likelihood of ‘very likely/observed’ or ‘likely’.

This means that additional hazards (street/flash flooding, gusty winds, landslides) are still possible; the impacts are minor for this particular alert.

The Met Office advises motorists and residents in areas prone to landslides or flooding, especially along the Caroni River basin, to continue monitoring the situation and exercise caution. Be aware of your surroundings and changing weather conditions. Monitor weather updates.
