Two Early Morning, Moderate Quakes Shake Trinidad and Tobago

Trinidad and Tobago was shaken by two moderate earthquakes within 70 minutes on Monday morning, a magnitude 5.1 north of Tobago and a magnitude 5.0 northwest of Trinidad. Both were widely felt. The Tobago earthquake is the strongest recorded within 20 kilometers of its location in the instrumental record. Using the one publicly accessible seismometer in the country, we show why one was felt as a long roll and the other as a sharp jolt.

How did the Venezuelan Earthquakes Affect T&T?

Seven hundred and eighty kilometers away, the strongest earthquake Venezuela has recorded since 1900 was barely felt in Trinidad. Not a single report was filed with the USGS. Yet within days, the coast at Galfa Point had risen as much as 20 feet, a road at L'Envieuse had torn in two, ponds had sloshed over their banks, and a new island of mud had broken the surface off the south coast. Using one citizen seismometer, satellite imagery, and the geologists who went and looked, this is what actually happened, and why distance made it worse rather than better.
