Subtropical Storm Don Forms, Meandering In The North Atlantic Ocean

Subtropical Storm Don formed in the North Atlantic Ocean on July 14th, 2023, well away from any landmasses, and is forecast to meander in the open ocean for the next several days.

Don is the fifth named storm for 2023, with only 2021, 2020, and 2005 having 5th earlier named storm formations, according to Colorado State University meteorologist Philip Klotzbach.

Don is a subtropical storm, meaning it has some characteristics of tropical cyclones that originate from the deep tropics, like east of Trinidad and Tobago but derive most of their energy from the clash of warm and cold air, with no associated cold or warm fronts.
