Live Updates: Aftermath of Invest 91L, ITCZ Activity Across T&T (Day 5)

Heavy showers and thunderstorms remain forecast across Trinidad and Tobago as deep-layered moisture associated with the Intertropical Convergence Zone and a favorably positioned upper-level trough supports unstable conditions.

What has happened: Invest 91L, a tropical disturbance that has become Hurricane Julia, moved across Trinidad and Tobago on Wednesday, producing torrential rainfall. Unstable conditions following the disturbance resulted in persisting rainfall with overall accumulations of up to 200 millimeters in a 48-hour span. Major rivers and their tributaries broke their banks with a significant number of landslides reported, particularly across Tobago.
What can you expect: Intervals of showers are forecast through the next three days with brief heavy pockets and isolated thunderstorms. Overall heavier rainfall is forecast to favor eastern and northern Trinidad as well as Tobago. This activity is due to unstable conditions across the country associated with the Intertropical Convergence Zone and a favorably positioned trough system north of the Lesser Antilles.Street and flash flooding remains highly likely while lingering riverine flooding remains possible, particularly across the North Oropouche and Caroni River Basins. Gusty winds up to and in excess of 45 KM/H accompanying heavy showers or thunderstorms are possible, accompanying thunderstorms and heavy showers. Lightning will accompany thunderstorms. Landslides, mudslides, and rockfalls are likely across Tobago and elevated areas of Trinidad.
Alerts/Watches/Warnings: The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service issued an Adverse Weather Alert (Yellow Level) for Trinidad and Tobago from 8:00 AM Sunday, October 9th, and remains in effect through 8:00 PM Sunday, October 9th. There are no tropical storm or hurricane watches or warnings in effect for T&T at this time.
