Occasionally Rough Seas Forecast From This Weekend For T&T

Seas Forecast For Trinidad and Tobago

Sea state through the next seven days as generally moderate to rough seas are forecast. Note that sheltered areas include bays, beaches, and generally, the Gulf of Paria and western areas of the Columbus Channel in Trinidad and the western coasts of Tobago. Open waters are the Atlantic Ocean (Eastern Trinidad and Tobago), the Eastern Columbus Channel (Southern Trinidad), and the Caribbean Sea (north of Trinidad, west of Tobago).

Thursday through Saturday: Seas are forecast to be moderate in open waters, with waves between 1.5 and 2.5 meters. On Saturday night, open water waves may exceed 2.5 meters in northeastern areas, becoming rough. In sheltered areas, waves are forecast to be below 1.0 to 1.5 meters. Swell periods are forecast to range between 7 and 10 seconds through Friday night, but from Saturday, swell periods are forecast to reach as high as 17 seconds. Winds are forecast to range between 15-20 knots from the northeast to east-southeast, gusting near 20 knots and up to 25 knots on Saturday.

Sunday through Wednesday: Seas are forecast to be moderate to rough in open waters, occasionally rough, with waves generally between 1.5 and 2.5 meters, but particularly in eastern and northeastern waters, waves as high as 3.0 meters are forecast. In sheltered areas, waves are forecast to be below 1.5 meters. Swell periods are forecast to range between 8 and 14 seconds. Winds are forecast to range between 15 and 20 knots from the northeast to east-southeast, and near 20 knots, particularly on Monday night through Wednesday, gusting up to 30 knots, particularly Monday night through Wednesday. Spring tides are set to begin on Monday, January 22nd, 2024, with further agitation possible with showers by mid-week next week.

Possible Impacts

Saharan Dust concentrations are forecast to be minimal or not present during the forecast period. Daytime haze is also not forecast to affect visibility significantly.

Elevated winds near 20 knots are forecast to agitate seas in open waters in eastern coastal waters, which will require caution from small craft operators and marine interests.

Additionally, spring tides are forecast to begin on Monday, January 22nd, 2024, resulting in higher-than-usual high tides and lower-than-usual low tides. During high tide periods, all marine interests are advised to exercise caution with an elevated risk of rip currents.
