Floods, Landslides Hit T&T For Second Day

As Trinidad and Tobago experienced its second day of inclement weather, this time due to the Intertropical Convergence Zone, localized thunderstorms produced sporadic areas of damage across the country.

From early Wednesday morning, thunderstorms and heavy showers moved across southern and eastern areas of Trinidad, producing street and flash flooding across Penal, Barrackpore, and San Francique. Flooding was reported along Penal Rock Road in the vicinity of Sou Sou Lands Development, parts of Rochard Road, Satnarine Trace, and Clarke Road. A fallen tree was reported at Murray Trace, San Francique, which was eventually cleared by the Trinidad and Tobago Fire Service.

Rainfall exacerbated landslides across northeastern Trinidad along the Paria Main Road near San Souci and at Caigual Road, Sangre Chiquito. The Ministry of Works and Transport indicated they are responding to the Sangre Chiquito repair.

Afternoon thunderstorms in Tobago brought torrential rains to parts of the island. At Crown Point, Tobago, sustained winds of 37 KM/H were recorded. According to the Tobago Emergency Management Agency (TEMA), a landslide occurred between Idlewild and Bad Rock, which has since been cleared. TEMA also received reports of a fallen tree at Lowlands near Magdelena Grand, which partially blocked the road. Street flooding also occurred in the Canaan area.

In the northwest, which experienced significant flash flooding on Tuesday, a house collapsed at Farrell Lane, Belmont. The sole resident sought refuge with relatives. Landslides also occurred along Lady Young Road, which temporarily blocked one lane of traffic and was cleared, and another at Debe Road, Long Circular, St. James, which affected two residential properties. Further east, a fallen tree also occurred at Laurel Hill, Range Road, Five Rivers.

T&T Remains Under An Adverse Weather Alert

At the time of Wednesday’s inclement weather, Trinidad, Tobago, and surrounding marine areas were under a yellow-level Adverse Weather Alert from the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service, which went into effect at 9:00 AM Tuesday and remains in effect until 3:00 PM Saturday.
