Tobago’s Schools Dismissed Early Due To Adverse Weather

The Tobago Division of Education, Research and Technology (DERTech) has dismissed all schools under its purview due to adverse weather, based on advice from the Tobago Emergency Management Agency.

In a media release issued shortly before 11:00 AM today, DERTech states, “According to advice received from the Tobago Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) regarding the Yellow Level Adverse Weather Alert, conditions are expected to intensify. As a result, the Division of Education, Research and Technology has decided, in the best interest of all students and staff, to dismiss all schools across Tobago under its purview. Although some schools with isolated events were dismissed earlier, out of an abundance of caution, the curriculum has been suspended with immediate effect.”

The release continued, “Students currently sitting the CAPE MOB examinations will be allowed to continue writing their exams as scheduled. However, the TTNLA exams have been postponed and will be rescheduled to a date to be announced.”

DERTech added that parents and guardians are advised to make the necessary arrangements to collect their children as soon as possible to ensure their safety, and maxi taxi concessionaires have already been advised to transport students home.

An Adverse Weather Alert went into effect for Trinidad and Tobago at 2:00 AM Tuesday as an active tropical wave brought showers and isolated thunderstorms to the country. Since midnight, between 50 and 75 millimeters of rainfall have fallen across Tobago, with wind gusts reaching 60 km/h. As a result, localized flooding and fallen trees have been reported across the island.

Additional showers and thunderstorms remain forecast today through the remainder of this week. DERTech did not indicate whether Tobago schools will open on Wednesday, nor has there been any update from the Ministry of Education on Trinidad’s school operations.
