TTMS: “30% to 50% Chance of Tropical Storm Conditions, Favoring Tobago”

With Tropical Depression Two forming and forecast intensification into a possible Category 2 Hurricane as it moves north of T&T on Monday, many are asking if T&T will be placed under a watch or warning as this system nears.

Though the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) has not issued any alerts, watches, or warnings at this time, the Met Office says in the latest official statement that “Based on the current track, Tobago lies on the southern edge of the cone, and there is a low to medium (30% to 50%) chance of Tropical Storm conditions favoring Tobago.” At this time, according to the Met Office, the system poses no direct threat to Trinidad.

The TTMS says they are actively monitoring the newly formed Tropical Depression
Two in the central Tropical Atlantic. At 5:00 PM Friday, the depression was located at 9.1ºN latitude 41.9ºW longitude, approximately 2,064 kilometers east-southeast of Trinidad and Tobago.

The Met Office says, “The overall atmospheric and oceanic conditions appear conducive for steady strengthening during the next few days. Accordingly, the offcial forecast calls for strengthening and shows the depression becoming a tropical storm tonight or early Saturday and then a hurricane before it reaches the Windward Islands.”

The TTMS is forecasting cloudy skies with showers and a medium to high chance of thunderstorm activity by Monday, July 1st, 2024. Sea conditions are expected to become further agitated
