Tracking COVID-19 In T&T – May Through June 2020

COVID-19 cases, deaths, and recoveries data (through 6 PM June 30th, 2020) from the Ministry of Health (Trinidad and Tobago) and The Division of Health, Wellness and Family Development (Tobago)

Trinidad and Tobago has recorded 130 confirmed COVID-19 cases, 8 deaths, and 113 recoveries (discharged). 5089 samples have been submitted to the Caribbean Public Health Agency and the University of the West Indies site for testing.

As of 6:00 PM Tuesday 30th June 2020, there are nine (9) active COVID-19 cases in T&T. All of these nine are imported cases comprising of returned nationals from the United States, the Enchantment of the Seas Cruise Ship, and a returning student.

While it is not entirely clear the number of cases that are classified as local, imported, or community spread, 52 positive cases have originated from one cluster – the Costa Favolosa cruise. 49 of these cases have stemmed from 68 nationals that have been quarantined at Camp Balandra while 3 additional cases were nationals who returned to T&T separately.

Data from the Ministry of Health daily press releases and updates containing the number of samples submitted to the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) and the University of the West Indies (as of Monday 4th May 2020) for testing for COVID-19. Note that these figures show the number of samples submitted by the Regional Health Authorities across Trinidad and Tobago, showing both individual tests and retests as part of the discharge protocol, which requires two tests within 24-hours. It does not include rejected samples by CARPHA.

The number of samples submitted to CARPHA and UWI is at 5089, a 32 sample increase from 24 hours ago at yesterday’s 6 PM Update.


In the 10 AM update, Trinidad and Tobago has recorded four new cases and four new recoveries.

Three of the new cases originated from a group of recently deported nationals from the United States while one is a returning student from Barbados.

Four people have been discharged from the Caura Hospital.

In the Ministry of Heath’s 10 AM Update, of the 5,061 samples submitted to CARPHA and UWI for testing, 3,986 samples were unique while 1,075 samples were submissions for retests. Note that none of the 5,061 samples reported in the press release were rejected samples.

Two New COVID-19 Cases

As of the 6 PM update, the two new cases reported in the Ministry of Health’s Press Conference was listed on the updated.

The number of samples submitted to CARPHA and UWI is at 4,866, a five (5) sample increase from 24 hours ago at yesterday’s 6 PM Update.


In the 10 AM update and as of the 11:00 AM Ministry of Health Press Conference, Trinidad and Tobago has recorded two more cases originating from the Enchantment of the Seas.

Minister of Health, Terrence Deyalsingh gave an update on the status of Covid-19 facilities in T&T. He said that to date, there are 560 persons quarantined in total and proceeded to give a breakdown of the individual facilities.

  • UWI Debe/Penal Campus – 32 persons This number includes 5 people that were taken off of the Enchantment of the Seas cruise ship and Minister Deyalsingh emphasized that they are NOT COVID-19 Positive but simply required health care on land.
  • Chancellor Facility – 14 people
  • Tacarigua Facility – 29 people
  • NAPA Facility – 12 Health Care Workers
  • Home of Football – 8 people
  • Sangre Grande Facility – 24 people
  • Enchantment of the Seas Cruise Ship – 295 people
  • UWI Canada Hall – 100 Students from Jamaica, all of whom tested Negative for Covid-19
  • UWI Freedom Hall – 46 students from Barbados who were swabbed yesterday

The Minister said that 17 people are expected today from a Norwegian Cruise Line and they will be quarantined at the Debe/Penal UWI Campus. He also indicated that 49 workers will be housed at Kapok for quarantine, which is being paid for by their employer.

The number of samples submitted to CARPHA and UWI is at 4,020, a twenty-five (25) sample increase from 24 hours ago at yesterday’s 6 PM Update.


In the 10 AM update, Trinidad and Tobago has recorded no new cases, recoveries, or deaths.

These six cases originated from the group of the 308 nationals who returned from the Enchantment of the Seas Cruise Ship. Of the 308 tests submitted to CARPHA, T&T received the results of 205, six of which came back positive, and another 103 are still pending. These new cases are considered an imported case.

All cruise ship passengers have remained quarantined on the vessel and there is no risk of local transmission to Trinidad and Tobago.

In the Ministry of Heath’s 10 AM Update, of the 4,001 samples submitted to CARPHA and UWI for testing, 3,387 samples were unique while 511 samples were submissions for retests. Note that none of the 4,001 samples reported in the press release were rejected samples.

T&T Records Six New COVID-19 Cases

As of the 6 PM update, there were no new reported recoveries or deaths.

Five additional persons from the 308 returning cruise ship workers have tested positive COVID-19, all of whom have been transferred to the Caura Hospital for treatment. All remaining cruise ship crew members remain quarantined on the vessel, limiting the risk of local transmission in T&T.

Our number of active cases has risen to six (6), with 109 recoveries and eight deaths. The total COVID-19 cases in T&T stands at 123.

The number of samples submitted to CARPHA and UWI is at 3,995, a 119 sample increase from 24 hours ago at yesterday’s 6 PM Update.


In the 10 AM update, Trinidad and Tobago has recorded a new COVID-19 case.

This case originated from the group of the 308 nationals who returned from the Enchantment of the Seas Cruise Ship that have been returning cruise ship workers across the Caribbean. Of the 308 tests submitted to CARPHA, T&T received the results of 153, one of which came back positive, and another 155 are still pending. This new case is considered an imported case.

All cruise ship passengers have remained quarantined on the vessel and there is no risk of local transmission to Trinidad and Tobago.

Our number of active cases is at one (1), with 109 recoveries and eight deaths. The total COVID-19 cases in T&T stands at 118.

In the Ministry of Heath’s 10 AM Update, of the 3,895 samples submitted to CARPHA and UWI for testing, 3,385 samples were unique while 510 samples were submissions for retests. Note that none of the 3,895 samples reported in the press release were rejected samples.

The number of samples submitted to CARPHA and UWI is at 3,876, a three hundred and thirty-eight (338) sample increase from 24 hours ago at yesterday’s 6 PM Update. This is the single largest 24-hour increase in samples submitted since the pandemic began in T&T.

At the 10:00 PM update, this new case was reported, as well as the number of samples submitted to CARPHA and UWI is at 3,149, a twenty-seven (27) sample increase from 24 hours ago at yesterday’s 10 PM Update.

At 6:45 PM, the Minister of Health confirmed our 117th COVID-19 case in Trinidad and Tobago.

According to Minister Terrance Deyalsingh, the case originated from a family of three that returned to the country late Thursday evening. They were immediately taken into quarantine at the Home of Football Couva. As per protocol, under strict quarantine, they were swabbed. Of the three members of the family, two tests came back negative and one came back positive.

The Minister of Health also reminded “This is an imported case, under quarantine and does not affect the measures to reopen the economy that the Prime Minister announced this afternoon.”

In the Ministry of Heath’s 10 AM Update, of the 1,838 samples submitted to CARPHA for testing, 1,517 samples were unique while 321 samples were submissions for retests. Note that none of the 1,838 samples reported in the press release were rejected samples.

Hospitalized (as of 10 AM): 6 patients, None (0) at the Caura Hospital, and 6 at the Couva Hospital. All 6 are stable and are considered ambulatory, meaning they are able to walk about and aren’t bedridden.

In Step Down Facilities (as of 10 AM): 15 patients, 6 at the Sangre Grande Centre (Brooklyn Step-Down Facility), and 9 at the Home of Football, Couva facility. All patients are considered low risk and stable.

10 More COVID-19 Patients Recover

As of the 10 PM Update, two additional patients have been discharged from the Sangre Grande Step Down Facility in Brooklyn.

Our number of active cases is at 25, with 83 recoveries and eight deaths. The total COVID-19 cases in T&T stands at 116.

The number of samples submitted to CARPHA increased to 1,838, a sixty-six (66) sample increase compared yesterday’s 10 PM update.


As of the 4 PM update, there were no new reported cases or deaths.

Eight patients were discharged from the Home of Football, Couva.

The number of samples submitted to CARPHA increased to 1,780.


In the 10 AM update, no new cases, deaths, or recoveries were announced in Trinidad and Tobago.

Quarantine Update: There are thirty-three people (not COVID-19 positive) at the Tacarigua Convalescent Center. These are the group of nationals who returned from Barbados. There are also four (4) healthcare workers completing their two-week quarantine at the National Academy for the Performing Arts (NAPA).

Surveillance Testing Update: As of yesterday (Thursday 30th April 2020), 304 tests were conducted, all of which returned with a negative result.
