Live Updates – The ITCZ and Tropical Wave 62 (Day 2)

The ITCZ and Tropical Wave 62 is forecast to affect Trinidad and Tobago between Friday 8th November and Sunday 10th November, bringing periods of showers and thunderstorms. This will trigger street and flash flooding; downed trees, utility poles, and lines; landslides/landslips; power outages and possible hazardous seas. Gusty winds are moving across Trinidad with winds gusting to 52 KM/H at Piarco and sustained at 19 KM/H.

At Mount St. Benedict, winds are sustained 32.3 KM/H gusting to 38.6 KM/H

Moderate to heavy showers are moving across Eastern Trinidad, weakening as it slowly moves westward, producing gusty winds and locally heavy rainfall.

At 5:39 PM, according to footage sent into TTWC, a brief waterspout was spotted off the west coast of Tobago.

Heavy showers and thunderstorms also affected the island today as Tropical Wave 62 moves across the region.

Waterspouts aren’t uncommon to T&T, particularly during the wet season.

Isolated showers continue across the Southern half of Trinidad and Tobago, with isolated heavy showers affecting Southwestern Trinidad and the Western coast of Tobago. Conditions to become gradually settled by the late evening across much of Trinidad, with lingering showers across Eastern Trinidad and Tobago.

A cluster of moderate to heavy showers is moving west-northwest across Southern Trinidad. These showers will begin to affect parts of Southwestern and West-Central Trinidad within the hour, bringing another round of locally heavy showers and gusty winds.

Street and flash flooding continues along the Western Main Road in the vicinity of Carenage, as well as along the Tucker Valley Road in Northwestern Trinidad.

Showers and thunderstorms persist across Western Trinidad, gradually weakening. Additional showers and thunderstorms are developing east of Trinidad, moving west-northwest. Heavier activity will favor Southeastern and Southern Trinidad over the next hour.

A very intense thunderstorm is occurring in the Gulf of Paria, coming onshore between Cocorite and Carnage. Rainfall rates in excess of 175 mm/hr (extremely violent) are being detected, with gusty winds likely accompanying this thunderstorm. Street/flash flooding imminent in the mentioned area.

Heavy showers and thunderstorms are developing across parts of Trinidad, with thunderstorms affecting West-Central and Southwestern areas. Moderate to heavy showers are developing across Tobago and the remainder of Trinidad. Gusty winds in excess of 35 KM/H are being recorded in thunderstorms.

Heavy showers are moving across parts of Southern and Central Trinidad, producing locally heavy to violent rainfall, gusty winds and reduced visibility on the roads.

It was a mostly hot and sunny morning cross Trinidad as atmospheric conditions were not supportive of shower and thunderstorm development. However, those sunny skies allowed for the atmosphere to become unstable, with isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms developing, slightly later than forecast, across both islands.

As we progress through the afternoon, intermittent showers and thunderstorms are forecast across both islands, with the heavier activity favoring Trinidad, bringing locally heavy rainfall and gusty winds. This activity will interrupt partly cloudy skies.

The main hazards are those gusty winds accompanying the heavier showers and thunderstorms, which may trigger street/flash flooding. Minor wind damage possible in higher gusts.
