Live Updates: The ITCZ – A Multi-Day Rainfall Event (Day 2)

The ITCZ is forecast to affect Trinidad and Tobago between Tuesday 8th October and Friday 11th October 2019, bringing periods of showers and thunderstorms. This will trigger street and flash flooding. Models continue to trend towards a very wet week, so there is a low chance (as of Tuesday morning) of riverine flooding; downed trees, utility poles, and lines; landslides/landslips; power outages and hazardous seas. Live Updates for Wednesday 9th October 2019 has ended. An Adverse Weather Alert goes into effect for T&T at 6:00 AM Wednesday.

Most of the heavy rainfall occurred across West-Central and Northern Trinidad on Wednesday, as well as across Tobago, with areas receiving between 0-2.5 inches (between 0-62.5 millimeters) during the 24 hour period. There were sporadic reports of street flooding across Western Trinidad, with landslides and flooding reported across Tobago.

Mostly cloudy to overcast skies are ongoing across Trinidad and Tobago, interrupted by periods of light rain.

Conditions are forecast to become more settled as the evening progresses, with a few isolated showers continuing to mainly impact Eastern Trinidad and Tobago.

Redevelopment of showers and thunderstorms is forecast after midnight, with similar activity to Wednesday forecast on Thursday.

Thunderstorms, showers, and broad areas of rain ongoing across Trinidad and Tobago. Thunderstorms are favoring Northwestern, Western and Eastern Trinidad at this time. There are confirmed reports of street and flash flooding across parts of Western Trinidad including Port of Spain and Gasparillo.

Street flooding is ongoing in the usual flood-prone areas of Port of Spain this afternoon, with confirmed street flooding ongoing along Ariapita Avenue, Independence Square, St. Vincent Street and environs.

Flooding is ongoing in the median of the Solomon Hochoy Highway in the vicinity of the Guaracara Tabaquite Overpass, between Gasparillo and Tarouba, South Trinidad. The highway remains clear at this time, but traffic is expected.

Heavy showers and thunderstorms are ongoing across Trinidad, with locally heavy rainfall, gusty winds, thunder and lightning reported. Winds are from the southeast, so developing activity will be moving towards the north and northwest.

Showers and thunderstorms may be enhanced as it moves across the Northern Range, presenting an elevated street and flash flooding threat along the East-West Corridor this afternoon.

Thunderstorms are developing across Trinidad, with isolated to scattered showers of varying intensities across both islands. Locally heavy rainfall, gusty winds, street/flash flooding remain the main hazards at this time, in addition to frequent lightning in thunderstorms.

As forecast, showers are increasing in coverage across Trinidad, with moderate showers ongoing across Tobago. There are several isolated heavy showers, mainly across Trinidad. Street flooding and gusty winds remain the main hazards.

Based on radar estimates, between 4:30 AM and 10:30 AM, between 12.5 millimeters and 37.5 millimeters (0.5 to 1.5 inches) of rainfall has accumulated across Central and Eastern Tobago, triggering flash flooding.

A landslide has occurred at Broad Road Moriah on the Northside Road.

The road is completely blocked and is impassable at this time. However, the Division of Infrastructure, Quarries and Environment (DIQE) is currently on the scene to clear the road.

Motorists & pedestrians are advised to proceed with caution in this area.

Flash Flooding is ongoing across Mason Hall, Tobago in the vicinity of Paige Gully, according to the Tobago Emergency Management Agency.

Do not venture into floodwaters. Water associated with flash flooding move at a high velocity, capable of washing persons and vehicles away.

Additional rainfall is forecast throughout today due to the ITCZ remaining across the region.

Isolated to scattered showers are ongoing across East-Central and Northeastern Trinidad, with partly cloudy skies elsewhere across the island. Showers across Trinidad forecast by the late morning. Moderate to heavy showers have been ongoing across Tobago over the last several hours. Street/flash flooding possible.

Much of Trinidad are waking up to sunshine this morning, as showers and cloudiness develop east of the island. As the day progresses, increasing cloudiness, scattered showers, and isolated showers are forecast to move across both islands as the ITCZ continues to affect the region, interrupting these sunny periods.

Elevated risk of street/flash flooding, gusty winds in excess of 55 KM/H, landslides. Adverse Weather Alert (Yellow Level) in effect.

Scattered showers are ongoing across Tobago, with isolated heavy pockets. Street flooding possible. Gusty winds may accompany heavier showers or thunderstorms. Isolated to scattered showers are also ongoing across Eastern Trinidad, with additional activity approaching both islands.

After a mostly settled daybreak across Trinidad, showers and thunderstorms are forecast, with partly cloudy to overcast periods.

As forecast, showers are beginning to develop east of Trinidad and Tobago, forecast to mainly affect Eastern Trinidad and all of Tobago prior to dawn. This activity, due to the ITCZ, will gradually move across the remainder of both islands after daybreak on Wednesday.
