Another Large Chemical Fire Ongoing in Southwest Trinidad, at La Brea

1:40 PM Sunday 26th May 2019 Update: An update posted by the Ministry of Rural Development & Local Government confirmed that firefighters from the Siparia and La Brea districts are on site and reports coming in confirm that the fire in the La Brea area has been extinguished. No reports of injuries have been reported at this time.

Early Sunday morning, 26th May 2019, a bush fire began at La Brea, in the vicinity of Kaizen Environmental Waste.

Due to prevailing winds from the east, to east-southeast, this bush fire made its way onto the waste facility and ignited a chemical dump. The type of chemical being burnt is unknown at this time.

However, firefighters are currently on site, likely using a mixture of water and mostly foam to extinguish the blaze.

Due to the site of Kaizen Environmental Waste and prevailing winds, no residents of La Brea are threatened due to smoke being carried out into the Gulf of Paria. In fact, the thick, black smoke can be seen from the GOES-16 Satellite Imagery below.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available. 

This is the second environmental waste fire within a week in the La Brea-Point Fortin area. The last occurred earlier this week with a similar setup of a bush fire spreading to a waste oil dump.
