Live Updates – Tropical Wave 34 & ITCZ

Tropical wave 34 is now well west of Trinidad and Tobago. The ITCZ is drifting southward. This inclement weather event is near its end as of 5:00 PM Monday 12th August 2019. Street/flash flooding, gusty winds, landslides/mudslides, downed trees & utility poles were possible.

Mostly overcast conditions are ongoing across Trinidad and Tobago, with intermittent showers and thunderstorms, mainly offshore both islands. Additional showers are likely later this afternoon with a few thunderstorms favoring Trinidad.

Scattered showers and isolated heavy showers and thunderstorms are occurring, mainly across Trinidad. Across much of the island, up to 20 millimeters of rainfall has accumulated since midnight.

Street flooding as been reported across parts of Chaguanas and in the Penal/Debe area. No roadways are impassable at this time. Additional street/flash flooding and gusty winds possible as the evening progresses.

Frequent lightning is ongoing as thunderstorms affect parts of Trinidad. Over the last hour, 595 lightning strokes have occurred across T&T with 329 of these strikes occurring cloud-to-ground. Most of these strikes have occurred in the Gulf of Paria.

The axis of Tropical Wave 34 is along 68/69W, well west of Trinidad and Tobago. However, the ITCZ is across both islands, aiding in the development of showers and forecast thunderstorms.

Scattered showers have definitely increased in coverage since the last update, with intermittent sunny to partly cloudy skies across both islands. There is a notable increase in heavier pockets.

Scattered showers are ongoing across Trinidad and Tobago as the ITCZ is now across Trinidad and Tobago. These showers are forecast to persist throughout the day, gradually becoming heavier and developing into thunderstorms by the afternoon.

Isolated to scattered showers have developed across parts of Western and Northern Trinidad, as forecast.

Isolated to scattered showers are ongoing across the Southern half of Trinidad, with a few heavier showers favoring Eastern Trinidad.

Yet another hot and sunny day across T&T is forecast today.

Presently, isolated to scattered showers are favoring the southern half of Trinidad, interrupting sunny skies.

However, by the afternoon, showers and thunderstorms may develop across mainly Trinidad. Street flooding and gusty winds are likely in heavier showers and t-storms.
