Golden Grove Road Partially Collapse At Arouca River

After two days of heavy rainfall across North-Central Trinidad, the Golden Grove Road, at the Arouca River has partially collapsed. This is also in the vicinity of the Golden Grove Prison.

Officers from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service attached to the Arouca Police Station and officers from the Trinidad and Tobago Prisons Service are on site, as well as the Tunapuna/Piarco Regional Corporation and have closed the Golden Grove Road.

It is now inaccessible to all vehicular traffic at this time. Members of the public are advised to seek alternate routes in and out of the area.

The Ministry of Works and Transport is aware of the bridge failure along the Golden Grove Road, Arouca. According to the Ministry, engineers attached to the Highways Division are currently on site conducting an assessment. A Bailey bridge will be temporarily erected starting from tomorrow.

Over the last 48 hours, parts of North-Central Trinidad have recorded between 50 millimeters (2 inches) and 75 millimeters (3 inches) of rainfall. This rainfall was due to light winds from the southeast to south at times, channeling moisture up along the south-facing slopes of the Northern Range. This movement of moisture led to orographic precipitation and enhancement of convection, triggering heavy showers and thunderstorms along the East-West Corridor which caused street and flash flooding in the area.
