First Adverse Weather Alert For 2020 Issued For T&T Due To Tropical Wave 05

Key Messages:
— An Adverse Weather Alert Yellow Level will go into effect from 3:00 AM Friday through 4:00 PM Friday 5th June 2020 for both Trinidad and Tobago. Note that overall heavier showers and thunderstorms are still forecast to remain to the east.
— Showers and thunderstorms are forecast to begin overnight tonight and continue through Saturday afternoon. During this period, less than 15 millimeters are forecast across most areas but in areas with isolated thunderstorms or repeated downpours, between 25 to 37.5 millimeters are possible across Trinidad and Tobago with heavier totals across Eastern and Southern halves of Trinidad, as well as Eastern Tobago. There is an elevated threat of street flooding, lesser so flash flooding.
— Seas will remain moderate, up to 2.0 meters in open waters but occasionally rough or choppy during thunderstorms or heavy/violent showers
— Gusty winds in excess of 60 KM/H possible, particularly on Friday. Winds of this strength will produce wind damage including downed trees, utility poles and roof damage. Localized power outages possible.
Landslides possible in elevated areas, but due to the lack of persisting heavy rainfall, this threat is low.

The Adverse Weather Alert

As we’ve forecast, Tropical Wave 05 is forecast to traverse the region on Friday 5th June 2020, bringing periods of rain, showers, and isolated thunderstorms. Because of the now high chance for thunderstorm activity, the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service has issued an Adverse Weather Alert (Yellow Level) at 2:24 PM Thursday.

The alert will begin at 3:00 AM Friday 5th June 2020 and continue through 4:00 PM Friday 5th June 2020.

Trinidad and Tobago is NOT under any tropical storm watch or warning AT THIS TIME.

Based on the latest model guidance and analysis, severe weather is forecast to begin overnight tonight through Friday, settling by the late afternoon. However, isolated thunderstorms are possible again on Saturday and Sunday, during the late morning through the afternoon.

Information from the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service concerning the Adverse Weather Alert for June 5th 2020

There is 70% chance of heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms associated with the passage of a Tropical Wave . This activity is expected to peak during early morning tomorrow (5th June 2020). Street flooding is likely in heavy downpours and gusty winds in excess of 60 km/hr can accompany showers and thunderstorms.” according to the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service. This “alert” status takes into account the possibility of the event occurring. This adverse weather event is likely.

The color of the alert indicates the severity of the event and the probability of the event occurring. Currently, the alert level is at Yellow. This means that the hazard is possible to be aware of the impacts of Street/Flash Flooding and Gusty Winds in your area. Areas prone to landslides should also be aware of the hazard and impacts.
