— A Riverine Flood Alert (Yellow Level) has been issued for Trinidad until 6:00 PM Thursday
— River levels are approaching threshold values in some parts, especially along the Caroni River basin.
— In the last 12 hours, between 1 to 3.5 inches (25.4-88.9 millimeters) of rainfall has fallen across much of Trinidad. Additional rainfall remains in the forecast today through the remainder of the week, which may exacerbate the ongoing flooding.
— An Adverse Weather Alert is also in effect for Trinidad from 11:27 AM Tuesday through 6:00 PM Wednesday from the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service.
The Riverine Flood Alert
As we’ve been monitoring, heavy rainfall has been ongoing across Trinidad with street and flash flooding persiting.
With high tides at 1:50 PM, the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service has issued a Riverine Flood Alert (Yellow Level) at 12:05 PM Wednesday 18th August 2021.
The alert retroactively went into effect from 12:00 PM Wednesday 18th August 2021 through 6:00 PM Thursday 19th August 2021.
Trinidad and Tobago is NOT under any tropical storm watch or warning.
Information from the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service concerning the Riverine Flood Alert for July 29th-31st 2021.
“River levels are approaching threshold values in some parts, especially along the Caroni River basin. Some smaller watercourses have already reached and in some cases, exceeded their carrying capacity leading to flooding in some areas. Any additional rainfall together with runoff from earlier rainfall will to continue to elevate levels in major rivers.” according to the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service. This “alert” status takes into account the possibility of the event occurring. This riverine flood event is likely.
The color of the alert indicates the severity of the event and the probability of the event occurring. Currently, the alert level is at Yellow. This means that the hazard is possible to be aware of the impacts of street, flash, and riverine flooding in your area. Moderate impacts are very likely.
For a moderate Riverine Flood Alert, there is the potential for possible injuries with behavioral changes required to ensure safety. There may be minor damage to property, with income-earning temporarily disrupted. A couple of communities are affected.
Carefully monitor weather conditions and river/water levels. Monitor updates from official sources and plan safety measures and do not take unnecessary risks. Avoid driving or wading through floodwaters. Follow the instructions of government officials.
