— A Riverine Flood Alert Yellow Level is in effect from 8:00 PM Friday 4th June 2021 through 12:00 PM Sunday 6th June 2021 for “Low lying areas near watercourses in central and northern Trinidad.” River levels near the Caroni River Basin are near threshold values.
— Over the last 24-36 hours, between 2-3 inches (50-75 millimeters) of rainfall has fallen across much of Trinidad. Heavy rainfall is forecast to persist through Saturday evening, and in conjunction with high tides, riverine flooding is possible. Further rainfall is expected through Tuesday due to another tropical wave.
— An Adverse Weather Alert (Yellow Level) remains in effect for Trinidad and Tobago through 12:00 AM Sunday.
The Riverine Flood Alert
As we’ve been monitoring, minor streams and tributaries nearing threshold levels following saturated soils from rainfall over the last 12-18 hours.
With high tides and additional expected rainfall, the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service has issued a Riverine Flood Alert (Yellow Level) at 7:27 PM Friday 4th June 2021.
The alert is in effect from 8:00 PM Friday 4th June 2021 through 12:00 PM Sunday 6th June 2021. Note that heavy showers and thunderstorms are in the forecast for Sunday through Tuesday, though not as widespread as the last 18 hours.
Trinidad and Tobago is NOT under any tropical storm watch or warning.
Information from the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service concerning the Riverine Flood Alert for June 4th to 6th 2021.
“River levels are currently near threshold values in some parts, especially along the Caroni River basin. Additional rainfall is expected overnight tonight and tomorrow, Saturday 05th June 2021, which will further elevate river levels. There is a moderate risk to public safety, livelihoods and property as watercourses may overtop their banks.” according to the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service. This “alert” status takes into account the possibility of the event occurring. This riverine flood event is likely.
The color of the alert indicates the severity of the event and the probability of the event occurring. Currently, the alert level is at Yellow. This means that the hazard is possible to be aware of the impacts of street, flash and riverine flooding in your area. Moderate impacts are likely.
For a moderate Riverine Flood Alert, there is the potential for possible injuries with behavioral changes required to ensure safety. There may be minor damage to property, with income-earning temporarily disrupted. A couple of communities are affcted.
Monitor weather conditions and river levels before venturing outside. Monitor updates from official sources and plan safety measures, including emergency supplies of food and water. Follow the instructions of government officials.
