Tracking COVID-19 In T&T: 1,759 Cases, 1,061 Active

COVID-19 cases, deaths, and discharged (usually indicative of recoveries) data will be updated as new information from the Ministry of Health (Trinidad and Tobago) and The Division of Health, Wellness and Family Development (Tobago) is released.

Trinidad and Tobago has recorded 1,759 confirmed COVID-19 cases, 22 deaths, and 676 recoveries (discharged). 23,530 samples have been submitted to the Caribbean Public Health Agency and the University of the West Indies site for testing.

As of 6:00 PM Monday 31st August 2020, there are 1,061 active cases of COVID-19 in T&T.

Trinidad and Tobago is now classified as having community spread.

52 positive cases have originated from one cluster – the Costa Favolosa cruise. 49 of these cases have stemmed from 68 nationals that have been quarantined at Camp Balandra while 3 additional cases were nationals who returned to T&T separately.

12 positive cases originated from another cluster – the returning nationals from the Enchantment of the Seas cruise ship, where all 308 people have been in institutionalized quarantine upon their return to T&T’s borders.

Note that these figures show the number of samples submitted by the Regional Health Authorities across Trinidad and Tobago, showing both individual tests and retests as part of the discharge protocol, which requires two tests within 24-hours. It does not include rejected samples by CARPHA.

Our number of active cases is at 1,061, with 676 recoveries (persons discharged) and 22 deaths. The total COVID-19 cases in T&T stand at 1,759, with a 68-case increase in reported cases over the last 24 hours.

The number of samples submitted to CARPHA and UWI is at 23,651, a 121 sample increase from 24 hours ago at yesterday’s 6 PM Update.


In the 10 AM update, the following was provided:

One additional COVID-19 related death was recorded in T&T. The patient was an elderly female with co-morbidities. This brings the total number of COVID-19 related deaths to 22.

Thirty-six (36) people tested positive for COVID-19. These new positive cases reported show results from samples taken during the period August 23rd to August 31st. Therefore, this figure is NOT representative of the positive cases over the last 24 hours only.

Four (4) people have been discharged from hospital and step down facilties.

In addition, based on the new home quarantine procedure for mild and asymptomatic cases, nine hundred and nine (909) patients are now in-home quarantine. These patients are under the continuous monitoring of the respective County Medical Officers of Health (CMOH) offices. Thirty-six (36) new patients will be processed for admission at the discretion of the CMOHs.

In the Ministry of Heath’s 10 AM Update, of the 23,530 samples submitted to CARPHA and UWI for testing, 20,608 samples were unique while 2,922 samples were submissions for retests.

In the 10 AM update, the following was provided:

Two additional COVID-19 related deaths were recorded in T&T. Both patients were elderly males with co-morbidities. This brings the total number of COVID-19 related deaths to 21.

Thirty-eight (38) people tested positive for COVID-19. These new positive cases reported show results from samples taken during the period August 22nd to August 29th. Therefore, this figure is NOT representative of the positive cases over the last 24 hours only.

Eight (8) people have been discharged from hospital and step down facilties.

In addition, based on the new home quarantine procedure for mild and asymptomatic cases, eight hundred and seventy (870) patients are now in-home quarantine. These patients are under the continuous monitoring of the respective County Medical Officers of Health (CMOH) offices. Thirty-eight (38) new patients will be processed for admission at the discretion of the CMOHs.

Twenty-three (23) people tested positive for COVID-19. These new positive cases reported show results from samples taken during the period August 21st to August 28th. Therefore, this figure is NOT representative of the positive cases over the last 24 hours only.

Thirty-six (36) people have been discharged from hospital and step down facilties.

In addition, based on the new home quarantine procedure for mild and asymptomatic cases, seven hundred and eighty-five (785) patients are now in-home quarantine. These patients are under the continuous monitoring of the respective County Medical Officers of Health (CMOH) offices. Twenty-three (23) new patients will be processed for admission at the discretion of the CMOHs.

Forty-two (42) additional persons have tested positive for COVID -19. These new cases show results from samples taken during the period from August 20th to August 28th, 2020. Therefore, this figure is NOT representative of the positive cases over the last 24 hours only.

In addition, two COVID-19 related deaths were recorded. One is an elderly male with co-morbidities and the other is an adult female. This brings our 24-hour death total to four, marking T&T’s deadliest COVID-19 day since the pandemic hit our shores.

Our number of active cases is at 907, with 628 recoveries (persons discharged) and 19 deaths. The total COVID-19 cases in T&T stand at 1,554.

The number of samples submitted to CARPHA and UWI is at 22,937, a 361 sample increase from 24 hours ago at yesterday’s 6 PM Update.


In the 10 AM update, the following was provided:

T&T has recorded two more COVID-19 related deaths, both elderly males with co-morbidities. This has brought T&T’s COVID-19 death toll to 17./p>

Thirty-six (36) people tested positive for COVID-19. These new positive cases reported show results from samples taken during the period August 20th to August 27th. Therefore, this figure is NOT representative of the positive cases over the last 24 hours only.

Thirty-four (34) people have been discharged from hospital and step down facilties.

In addition, based on the new home quarantine procedure for mild and asymptomatic cases, six hundred and seventy-five (675) patients are now in-home quarantine. These patients are under the continuous monitoring of the respective County Medical Officers of Health (CMOH) offices. Forty-seven (47) new patients are en route/being admitted to hospital and the 36 new patients will be processed for admission.

In the Ministry of Heath’s 10 AM Update, of the 22,792 samples submitted to CARPHA and UWI for testing, 19,870 samples were unique while 2,922 samples were submissions for retests.

The following update was provided:

Forty-seven (47) additional persons have tested positive for COVID -19. Of these 47 persons, 20 are nationals and 27 are non-nationals who are currently quarantined at the Trinidad and Tobago Defense Force (TTDF) site. These individuals pose no risk of spread to the population of Trinidad and Tobago.

This brings the total number of non-nationals testing positive for COVID-19 during phase two to 44. Notably, the other 17 non-nationals were previously admitted through the parallel health care system.

The forty-seven (47) positive cases reported above show results from samples taken during the period August 19th to August 26th, 2020. Therefore, this figure is NOT representative of the positive cases over the last 24 hours only.

Our number of active cases is at 867, with 594 recoveries (persons discharged) and 15 deaths. The total COVID-19 cases in T&T stand at 1,476.

In the 10 AM update, the following was provided:

Eighteen (18) people tested positive for COVID-19.The new eigtheen (18) positive cases reported show results from samples taken during the period August 19th to August 26th. Therefore, this figure is NOT representative of the positive cases over the last 24 hours only.

Based on the new discharge criteria, four hundred and two (402) people have been discharged from hospital and step down facilties.

In addition, based on the new home quarantine procedure for mild and asymptomatic cases, six hundred and seventy (670) patients are now in-home quarantine. These patients are under the continuous monitoring of the respective County Medical Officers of Health (CMOH) offices. The 18 new patients will be processed for admission.

In a press release issued by the Ministry of Health at 3:00 PM, the Ministry has confirmed T&T has recorded our 9th COVID-19 related death. This would mark our first COVID-19 related death in 130 days since April 6th, 2020.

The patient was an elderly female with pre-existing medical conditions.
While the Chief Medical Officer was informed of the death at 12:15 PM, the Ministry ensured that the public release of the information was delayed until the family was informed and had ample time to process the information. It is hoped that patient confidentiality would be respected and that the family would be allowed to mourn in peace.

In the 10 AM update, Trinidad and Tobago has no new COVID-19 deaths or recoveries. One new case (#148) was reported, with an epidemiological investigation pending.

In an 11 AM press conference, the Principal Medical Officer – Epidemiology, Dr. Naresh Nandram, confirmed that the most recent COVID-19 case is a 43-year-old man who presented at the Arima District Health Facility. Officials became aware of this case last night and have begun investigations. There are at least eight persons in this household (3 adult males, three adult females, and two children). One child in this household is an SEA student at the Tacarigua Presbyterian School. The school is closed from today, and contact tracing for students, families, and teachers has begun.

Case #148, a delivery driver, was symptomatic for six days and went to work every day. Officials are testing everyone the individual came into contact with through work, and sanitization has begun at business places.

In the 10 AM update, Trinidad and Tobago has no new COVID-19 deaths or recoveries. Five new cases were recorded, all primary contacts of Case 142.

They include three children in the same household. Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh confirmed that the Maraval RC School had to be closed because the parents of a child in this household allowed the child to attend school while ill on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.

In relation to this case, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Roshan Parasram confirmed that as much as 90 persons (including students and teachers) at the school have been deemed Primary Contacts and will now undergo the necessary protocols including home quarantine for 14 days.

More than 200 people have also been deemed Secondary Contacts. Dr. Parasram said one person from this cluster was moving about with symptoms, so there are additional Primary and Secondary Contacts that will now be placed in a 14-day quarantine. Dr. Parasram stated, “If the child had stayed at home when he was ill, we would have lost already 300 possible contacts and decreased the risk of Community Spread.”

Minister of Health, Terrence Deyalsingh, confirmed that Case #141 is a child of an employee at the West Mall branch of Republic Bank. The Minister also indicated that after an investigation was conducted, it was determined that there was close contact with 11 Bank employees, all of whom were sent home and swabbed.

Two new cases were reported, one case is imported from a returning national from Canada. The other is pending epidemiological investigation, Case #139.

The Chief Medical Officer stated that the latest non imported case would have been moving around as normal while ill for over a week and that they live with eight other persons. Dr. Parasram went on to say that contact tracing is underway, and 2 Pennywise Stores located on Charlotte Street and Long Circular Mall have been closed for sanitization. The CMO said that as contact tracing continues more stores may be asked to close to facilitate sanitization.

In the Ministry of Heath’s 10 AM Update, of the 5,089 samples submitted to CARPHA and UWI for testing, 3,996 samples were unique while 1,093 samples were submissions for retests. Note that none of the 5,089 samples reported in the press release were rejected samples.

Hospitalized (as of 10 AM): Seven (7) patients at the Caura Hospital for treatment.

Step Down Facilities (as of 10 AM): Zero (0) COVID-19 positive patients.
